One of the things that makes WordPress so powerful is the ability to expand it through the use of shortcodes. These little snippets that reside in square brackets can do all sorts of things. The problem with wp-ecommerce 3.8 is that as it comes it does not allow shortcodes to work on the products pages in the additional description section.

This can be a bit of a bind especially if you want to use the next gen plugin to deliver your product images or if you want to add a slideshow to the single product page. Using shortcodes can let you do so much more than if you just have the standard options. for instance I’ve used the shortcode for the flickr gallery plugin in to deliver images from a flickr group in one of my shops.

This modified file is a really useful way to bring the functions of WordPress plugins into your online store. You should be aware that this modification is set up to work on web sites that use wp-ecommerce 3.8 as a plugin and will probably not work on web sites that operate using a specific wp-ecommerce theme. This is because specialist wp-ecommerce themes tend to have their own adapted files that prevent outside plugins and hacks from working.

If you have a normal WordPress theme and use wp-ecommerce 3.8 as a straightforward plugin then this will work for you.
I’ve used this shortcode mod to deliver different content to logged in users to non logged in visitors and I’ve inserted polls into my product pages as well as various slideshows and galleries.
If you want to give your WordPress shop extra power then this is the way to do it. It should enable you to run most of the shortcodes from WordPress plugins within the supplementary or additional description segment of your single product page.
