As previously promised I have now made the LinkMyPics javascript by Michael VandeMar into a fully fledged WordPress plugin to help you to generate backlinks to your WordPress web site. If you are happy to share your images – and bandwidth – in order to gain valuable links then this is the plugin for you.
The plugin in called Imgbacklinks and you can download it free to use by using the link below.
Why do you need this WordPress plugin?
This plugin can help you build back links to your web site. When someone wants to use one of your pictures normally they will right click on the image and find the address to link to – hotlinking – or save the image for upload onto their own web site. Neither of these are particularly useful for you.
With this plugin when some one right clicks on your image a pop up box appears that gives the code for the image and includes a link back to your website. The code is offered in two formats – html and bbcode for forums.
The code will return the alt tags – good for keyword links – the image address and the web page url that the code is featured on. Check out my post with 3D web design and Abergavenny Castle to see it in action. Just right click on any image for the box.
What make this image backlink generator plugin different from the others?
There are a couple of other image backlink generators available for WordPress but they did not meet my needs. The other plugins will place a text box somewhere on your page with the relevant code. You can not always control where that box goes and it can break the look of your site. They also only apply to one image on the page – normally the featured image – this is not so good if you have a number of images to share.
The Imgbacklink plugin only displays the code if someone wants to use the image by right clicking on the picture. This means there’s no messy text boxes with code spoiling the look of your page. This plugin also operates with all the pictures that you put in the content section of the post so you don’t need to have a new page for each image that canbe used by others.
How to install Imbacklink generator?
Just simply download the zip file below (I hope to get the plugin included in the WordPress Repository soon). Then install as normal using the autoinstaller in your WordPress plugins dashboard. Now every post that is added to a page will be supported by the Imgbacklink plugin. You can check it’s working by adding an image to a new post and then looking at the html view – a mouseup event to launch the javascript should now be attached to your image tags.
There is currently no settings to configure it’s just activiate the plugin and let it run. You do need to make sure that you do not link any image you want covered back to itself – so if you theme automatically adds the image url as a link just delink the image.
Things to do in future:
Try and hook into the image editor to add a tick box to provide option for which images are covered and which are not.
If you have any problems please post it below. This is my first plugin I’ve developed for WordPress -rather than hacking other plugins for my own use – and any comments will be appreciated.
Download from the WordPress Plugin Repository.

wow, cool .. this plugin is very useful and helpful to get backlinks. thanks
A very good plugin, but I was wondering, could you make it work also for previously inserted photos, and not only for the ones inserted after installing this plugin?
Hi
Unfortunately it’s not possible to use this plugin on previous posts because of the way that WordPress writes the image call to the post.
When you add an image to the post Wordpess writes all the image tag information when the post is published. Sadly all you can do is redit each post to resave the new image call.
Sorry
Kevin
Oh well, it was a long shot anyway… It’s a very good plugin as it is. Congrats for your first wordpress plugin.
