Woocommerce is a popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress. However, there are things which can cause user experience issues. For example,  when you add a product to a sub-category, the product is also on the parent category archive page.

It’s not a massive issue but it can spoil the appearance of your WordPress shop. It can also cause issues with duplicate content depending on how you have set up your archive pages with no index tags.

There are a number of ways to deal with this by adapting the Woocommerce product-archive PHP file or adding code to your functions file to filter products so they only show in the sub-category archive page and not the parent category.  Alternatively, install this plugin and the products will display in the child category archives that they are placed in. They will not display in the parent category.

You can then turn the parent category archive page into a powerful landing page.  It can be designed and optimised for search engines. At the same time, it can still look good and relevant for visitors to the shop. The only additional thing you need to do, depending on the theme, is to hide the notice that no products were found. This is simple to do with a small addition to your style sheet.

For standard Woocommerce themes and installations you just need to add:

p.woocommerce-info {display:none;} to the CSS stylesheet to hide the message.

I use this on many of my affiliate sites and also commercial e-commerce sites that I manage.
